Baby Steps – Page 4 – CADENCE ELLIE PIEPER

Short film idea.

As I was coming out of Cady’s school this morning with a picture of a zebra she made for me, another dad glanced down at the construction paper and gave me a nod and smile. I returned it.

It seems vaguely familiar, so I may be stealing it, but here’s the short film pitch as it stands now 😉

The film fades slowly in from black with 3 or 4 parents huddled near a car in a grade school parking lot talking in a hushed, but excited tone.

Cut to a dad coming out of the school with a piece of construction paper in his hand. He immediately holds it triumphantly over his head and shouts, “I GOT A ZEBRA!” The huddled group of parents roar and rush towards the dad with the zebra artwork. You can see now, that they all have art from their kids in their hands too.

“Look! Flowers and a sun!”

It ends with the dad hanging the zebra picture on the wall at his work.

Dropped cookie

“Just put your cookie down before you put your finger in your ear next time.”

Of course I said that to my daughter. Of course.

Only famous

I just realized that Cady thinks that only famous people and pets die.

I saw a crack!

Cady and I were driving home from Olive Garden the other night as lightning was flashing in the eastern sky. She was really enjoying it. Most of it was sheet lightning, but the first time she saw an individual stroke, she yelled from the back seat, “I saw a crack!”

Fire Me

We were watching The Phantom Menace with Cady. Towards the end, Qui-Gon Jinn is killed by Darth Maul. Later, a funeral pyre. I didn’t catch it before it happened, and Cady had questions before I could fast forward. I poorly explained. A few moments later, we were playing wrestling, during which she feigned death and as she collapsed into my arms said with her dying breath, “fire me.”
